PROJECT SUMMARY
Client:
Managing Director – Major European bank – U.S. public finance subsidiary
Engagement:
While the client performed well in his area of expertise of providing financing to municipalities and partnering with other financial services firms in structuring "deals", his leadership skills needed improvement.
Deliverable:
Client participated in a feedback evaluation and received a "360 Degree" response related to his leadership skills. Based upon this feedback, he agreed that coaching would improve his effectiveness as follows by:
Becoming more collaborative in his decision making
Being more of an "emissary" to other areas of the firm
Building coalitions with other senior business people to promote his ideas for growing the business
Providing more strategic direction to his senior level colleagues
Offering additional coaching and support to his direct reports so that he could delegate more
Using insights derived from the 360 Degree feedback process, the client and the coach developed several new approaches to enhance leadership skills. Together with the coach, client reviewed how newly learned behaviors played out in an actual situation, an upcoming public finance offering.
The following tools and techniques were utilized during the coaching process:
Assessment instruments to assist the participant in gaining additional insight into his approach to certain situations, such as managing conflict
Presented and discussed relevant leadership topics and theory, such as situational leadership. Developed specific action plans to assess how the participant could apply these techniques to the job
"Coaching in the moment" of a difficult situation when the participant was unsure how to proceed
The coach and the participant reviewed all the elements that needed to be coordinated and researched for a successful launch of the public finance offering
Result:
The participant is now operating at a higher level of effectiveness and is adding more value to other areas of the firm. His improved ability to delegate to his subordinates has allowed him to focus his energies on providing more strategic direction and building coalitions with his senior business colleagues.
